Lauren Scruggs' family takes donations; once railed against Obamacare?

Aren't donations a passive form of welfare?

On December 3, 2011, 23-year-old model and former Gossip Girl intern, Lauren Scruggs, lost her left eye and left hand in a "freak accident".

Somehow, Scruggs inexplicably walked into an airplane's propeller.

With medical bills piling up, and an apparent need for financial assistance, a fund was created to help cover Scruggs' health care costs.

Although accepting, or asking for donations to pay for someone's medical bills isn't on the same level as an unconstitutional health care mandate, a handout is still a handout.

According to the rumor mill, Scruggs' parents, Cheryl and Jeff, are "staunch conservative Christians who rallied against health care reform just last year".

But now that their daughter is in need of assistance, the concept of people helping other people pay for medical treatment they might not otherwise be able to afford, must seem a little more appealing.

I'm uncomfortable with the Scruggs family asking for donations. I think they're taking advantage of people's sympathy.

Have the Scruggs said how much much they've collected? I think some accounting for the donations should be reported.
