Sad news from St. Louis, Missouri: Famed Showtime at the Apollo contestant and "Can I" singer, David Peaston, is dead at the age of 54.
News reports indicate the R&B and Gospel singer died Wednesday, February 1, 2012, due to complication stemming from diabetes.
Prior to Peaston's death, one of his legs was reportedly amputated.
The gifted singer leaves behind his wife, Marilyn, and his two sons, Daniel and Darius.
Peaston, a former school teacher, stepped into the national spotlight when he blew away Apollo Theater audiences with his soul-stirring rendition of “God Bless the Child”, back in the 80s.
Although David Peaston was one of the few male vocalist who could give Luther Vandross a run for his money, Peaston never quite reached Vandorss' level of success.
