Gay rumors: Is Jacob Lusk too 'femme' to be the next American Idol?

Written By Alfred Haynes on Thursday, March 24, 2011 | Thursday, March 24, 2011

Today's music scene isn't very receptive to openly gay male performers; and the biz is exceptionally cold when it comes to pudgy, black, flamboyant men.

If American Idol contestant, Jacob Lusk, isn't gay - he's certainly a close runner up. Watching Lusk perform on stage, is like watching your local drag queen lip-syncing in “her” street-clothes --- entertaining and a bit confusing.

Personally, I don't have a problem with Lusk's womanly mannerisms, but there are a lot of people, gay and straight, who are turned off by the singer's girlie posturing and Diva hand gestures.

While doing research for this article, I stumbled across a gay website featuring video of Lusk's A.I. performance of All I Need To Get By. Some of the comments, presumably left by members of the LGBT community, suggest straight folks are not the only people who have issues with effeminate men.

One reader said the chubby American Idol hopeful is “one eyebrow pencil away” from being a female impersonator. Another comment advised Lusk to “butch it up” if he wants to stay on the show.

Although Little Richard rose to fame in the 50’s, and acts like Sylvester and Luther Vandross achieved stardom in the 70’s and 80’s --- the black music audience has changed significantly since those days. Finding an audience that is willing to support Lusk financially, may prove to be a monumental task.

Here's the million dollar question: In a musical world of ghettoized rappers, sagging jeans, perfect abs, and jailhouse-like tattoos --- is there any room for a black male R&B singer who has a body like Homer Simpson and makes faces like Mae West?

I don't care if he's gay, femme or whatever. But what did put me off were histerics on one of the previous episodes. Balling your head off, hyperventillating and spazzing out--it's obnoxious drama queen behavior.

OMG you had me LMAO over here! Leave Jacob alone!!!

Anonymous, I wasn't picking on Jacob, just making a few honest observations. :-)

I like Jacob and think it's great that he's just being himself and I respect that... Gay or not brother you can sing .... Love you Jacob... Just be you!!!! Denise S.

P.S. If it weren't for you I wouldn't even watch this season...

he has an ok vice but he is hard t watch. i don't like men who act like ladies.

Where is his dad. This is a geat delima in the black community because of a lack of a male presence. He is a bit femme and who cares. I do not want to judge him for anything but his talent. I dont see singers when the radio is playing. I hear them. The great luther Vandross was a bit femme. Yet he sold millions of Cd's. Everyone has a place in the world in Gods eyes. Men are not considered men by their mere body movements. They are by their responsibilty and courage. I admire jacob for having the courage to sing befoe millions of people. Somthing most who have the ability could do. Jacob if you are reading this dont change. Be an original and not a cheap copy of one.

Timothy Fitz said...

Anonymous, you are right. Luther Vandross was a little on the girlie side, but he was widely accepted as one of the best male vocalist of our time. But the music business was a different place back then.

In the 70s and 80s, African-American music consumers were more open-minded when it came to recognizing real talent. The question is: Where does someone like Jacob Lusk, fit in to today's musical climate?

Anonymous said...

Jacob Lusk is a flamingfagonastick. He would be better off on the streets of Los Vegas selling himself for some crack. If Ryan Seacrest and Randy Jackson had a baby it would be Jacob Lusk.

Artist have to go out and perform to promote their material. And if people don't want to look at you, then what?

I must confess that it bother me too. BUT this is OUR problem, not Jacob's. He can only be Jacob. If you are reading this Jacob -- DO YOUR THING.

Ignorant is what you are Fitz! Who are you? A Non-MF Factor! His dad died when he was younger. Don't judge...GOD is greater that you! Jacob is humble and talented and if you met him you would forget to question if he was gay or straight. Gay recognizes Gay Holla!

Timothy Fitz said...

Izzaqt, there is a reason this article has been read more than 1,100 times, today. I merely said what everyone was thinking and provided a forum where the issue could be discussed.

Sweetie, calling me a non-factor or hinting that I might be gay, is a waste of keystrokes. Number one, non-factors seldom get people to respond. Number two, I am gay and damn proud of it.

Now, don't forget to tell all your friends about me.

Are you kidding me?!?!? Prince was and still is one of the most efemminate musicians their is. Not to mention Steve Tyler. The bottom line is Jacob is talented, no one can touch that boy or his pipes. If he was raised by his Mother and Grandmother he will carry their traits. Doesn't matter if he is or not gay. Talent is Talent and I would pay to see a real musician like him perform. One last thing, just wait another 20 years and you will see where these "musicians" of today are. Sitting in the unemplyment office like Britney Spears begging anyone to take her. Jacob will never have to worry about that. You watch it will be these strong matriarchial figures, Aretha, Patti, Gladys, Mary J. etc. that will help mold this boy.

"Everyone has a place in the world in Gods eyes. Men are not considered men by their mere body movements. They are by their responsibility and courage." -Had to re-post that!! I LOVE Jacob's amazing voice, & what does his orientation have to do with anything? I for one would buy his album over & over again! -Aimee =)

Seriously,...BUTCH IT UP MARY! I love the comment, "is “one eyebrow pencil away” from being a female impersonator." It is so true. Why don't the mentors and judges tell him so??? We were watching him last night, he started out (and ended) pretty well but then...oh, don't do it...ugh,...he fell right back into "Whitney" mode.

Anonymous said...

Just because Jacob is a drag queen doesn't necessarily mean he is going to hell. Come on people. As a gay man - I can say that the crying and hysterics I don't really understand or relate to. Frankly- it makes me very uncomfortable. He probably hasn't come out just yet. Give'em some heels! Where's Simon to lay into him when we need such honesty!? LOL

Anonymous said...

Honestly, I think Jacob has perfect pitch and if we all closed our eyes, we would LOVE him as an R&B singer. However, it is NOT the 60's or 70's and we all know what he looks like. I am a gay woman and the mere thought of looking at him perform makes me cringe! I hate his bubble butt, his arch in his lower back, his eye makeup, his hysterics, his very femme double ear piercings - nothing like a "rocker", the look of his tongue when he sings, and of course any and all mannerisms. However, like I started with... out of ALL A.I. contestants, he is the only one with perfect pitch. I don't even care if he is gay, just act like a man b/c that is what you are. At this point, you are "acting" like a "woman stuck inside a man's body awaiting surgery." And, hey, if that is you - go for it, but wait until after A.I., perhaps... But I'm stickin' to my truth here - the guy makes me sick when I watch and I hate it. - Great voice... horrid stage presence. I would NEVER see him in person - ewwww!!

Anonymous said...

the person above me hit the nail on the head! watching jacob lusk dancing around like a fat bald headed woman is a major turn off. but don't worry, soon he'll be gone! he was in the botton 3 tonight! that means next time he'll be voted off the show!

Anonymous said...

Your post is hilarious! All the things I wanted to say but don't have the creative writing skills or the audience to share it with!!

Everybody just shut up!!! LOL

Felt very wierd when i see him singing.
He is giving an uncomfortable moments.

BTW, why are the judges always going "ooohhh, you are so good here, so good there to all the contestants" I think they are musicians, but not producers, so when the contestants has better voice control and range then them, what can else can they say? Simon Cowell would be so much more entertaining here.

Dena said...

Why is it even being discussed about his body and movements. The guy has passion in his voice, he's an incredible singer and he is who he is. That is honest.
Personally, I think he is straight but if not he is a person that seems very humble. he has mentioned his faith in God, and he seems to have a very good heart. If we are here to pick apart the contestants what good does that do?

I feel sad that people can be so mean and run others down regarding their looks. I don't find him effeminate at all, I never even thought of it until it was brought up. I was right there with the judges thinking this man is an incredible talent with passion and conviction in his voice. If we sow judgment on another we will reap it back in some way on ourselves. Take a step back and check yourself people before running down another. Dena Johnson

As a personal friend of Jacob, I can honestly tell you that he is 1000% heterosexual! His father died when he was young and he has only had the guidance of women in his life. For those who wish to make this about Jacob's lifestyle, sorry but the "gay card" is not even an issue!

For those that are Christians, you know that a person being effeminate is not a person being homosexual. We have PRAY and "FAST and PRAY" for that spirit to be removed. We also have to as the Holy Spirit to send POSITIVE MALE MENTORS to help teach him about being a man--something that women (including myself) cannot do no matter how much we try. Jacob LOVES THE LORD and is a genuine Christian.

The feedback I have read here has been interesting, however most of it has not been true. BLESSINGS!

The only thing that matters about Jacob is his talent. And he has it in spades. He is who he is and whatever he is - and he has a right to be that way. Right or wrong I sometimes expect anti gay bias from straight people, but what really chaps my hide is when gay people pass judgment because someone is different. Isn't that what gays are fighting for? The right be themselves? Yet, you can't extend that to someone else. Ridiculous. The guy has got talent. Be who you are Jacob and frick the ones you will no doubt leave behind.

junior said...

Seriously people are entitled to their own opinion! Me myself is a gay man, thou we are faced with some challenging issues on a day to day basis! For people to be as cruel as they are I hope Jacob make it as far as he can, to provide to himself that he can be what and who he wanna be! Never did he say that he was gay and if he was thats him, I know men that sashay but are into very women! You are looking at his outta appearence judging that young man as if he was on the streets and killed someone. He's just a young average black male trying to do something with his life unlike most of most of u! All the talent that has been on American idol Clay, Adam lambert, Chris they said he was gay the list goes on. So where does this end people please get a grip on ur life. It really trips me out on how gay poeple say it makes them sick, how the hell u think it don't make other people sick because ur are gay!Hey on the other hand talk about him cause if he didn't your quote have a "shape like Homer Simpson and make faces like Mae West"he mite not get as much publicity as he get so go head talk about him! Do me a favor look up "individuality"!

Anonymous said...

Truly, even if he is "femme", or gay, or whatever he still has the voice of an angel! he's to me, one of the most greatest male singers on A.I since Ruben. and if anyone truly loves music as much as i do, they wouldn't care if he was gay or not. i mean Elton John was gay and so was Little Richard, so why could people accept them and their music, but not Jacob Lusk? this world is so cruel nowadays.

Timothy Fitz said...

Elton John and Little Richard are from a different era. Not to mention the fact that Elton and Richard played to predominately white crowds.

Jacob Lusk is singing in the age of hip-hop. There is a different standard for male performers today; especially, black men. If Prince tried to get a record deal today - he'd be laughed out of every record company in America.

Because of Jacob's voice and the way he looks, he is going to be marketed to a black audience.

Now... what I am about to say may cause a lot of people to wince, but today's black music audience isn't sophisticated enough to look pass Jacob's perceived "flaws" and simply accept his musical talent.

Until time proves me wrong, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Woo guys i thought of him being gay..then i said probably he just a happy guy..really happy one...then i thought of barney who was very happy and he is gay...i then google jacob and end up here with you all questioning what is actually a joke.
I can tell you talent is talent... you got to respect that...The perfect image in the industry...does not always last..If he is gay and got talent then that is what important,...

Fitz Daily you shoul focus on Scotty...He is the next big thing..you got to admit................. Also bad boy James..............................

Anonymous said...

I really really hate when people say - "even if he is gay he still can sing" - as if being gay is a bad thing...UGH...to me being gay is like being born with blonde hair or dark hair...or no hair or whatever...it's a hair color to me - except that not all humans have rights..so I do fight for gay rights...I don't just leave it at hair.

Thank you Timothy for saying what I have always been thinking but didn't have the guts to say. I love Jacob's voice, but seeing him acting like himself makes me cringe.

Anonymous said...

I would suggest that if all current male r'n'b singers are "ghettoized rappers, (with) sagging jeans, perfect abs, and jailhouse-like tattoos" then, yes, there is room for one singer like Jacob lusk. However, maybe you are right, given that talented American performers like the Scissor Sisters and Anthony Hegarty must look to Britain for any form of recognition.

Timothy Fitz said...

Anonymous said: "Thank you Timothy for saying what I have always been thinking but didn't have the guts to say. I love Jacob's voice, but seeing him acting like himself makes me cringe."

As intelligent people, we should be able to talk about the things that make us uncomfortable. I know plenty of gay men who are turned off by Jacob's mannerisms, but they would never say it publicly.

Jacob has a fantastic voice. Last night's performance of Bridge Over Troubled Waters brought tears to my eyes. Jacob's talent is undeniable, but we all know that talent is not enough to create a superstar in today's musical climate.

Anonymous said...

I am a very straight guy and I hope not to see Jacob again......because when I saw his performance it was the first time in my life I felt like kissing a man.

Derrick said...

Being a gay man myself, I have to admit that no matter his talents Jacob will always be classified as "Gay" which in todays society will hurt his carrer as an artist. yes there have been many girlie acts before him and they have all had success but its hard for Jacob to make it to the top. I wish him the best as he is very talented singer even if he does throw his hands in the air like a christina, mariah, whitney wanna be!

Anonymous said...

Steve Tyler has a "pass" on his girly hair and some of his mannerisms...Rock from his days was all about long hair and at times even wearing lipstick. Yet that didnt mean gay for Rock. So Steve has a pass since he is from those days [+ he has a wife and kids no?].

Jacob on the other hand doesnt have a pass. But he might not be gay to. Im leaning towards him not being gay, but that instead he is just a Nerd or a Mamma's boy. His mannerism points to gay but it could also point to - huge nerd who is young and would rather sing than worry about rap or looking cool.

Of course I could totally be wrong though and find out that he does like to suckle the penis.

Anonymous said...

I gotta be honest. His voice makes me want to scratch my eyes out. How the hell he made it to top 8 is beyond me.

Oh yeah. And did I mention the boy is bad? Awesome voice.

Good article... Fair questions, interesting insights on black performers and audiences today. Jacob's lady vibe is a compounding factor to his weight and the fact that AI is very middle-America; this is not Bravo and Project Runway. And faux-hitting on that TMZ girl has not helped cool the laugh factor. MJ wasn't exactly Rambo and I understand he had some success, but I think to Timothy's point, he was marketed to whites in an era when black males were "toned down" to make them less threatening. In the hip-hop era they've become quite threatening, which of course is the whole point. On the gay thing, it would be far more interesting to learn Casey, Stefano, Paul or James were gay -- guys you would not necessarily expect.

Anonymous said...

Black, male and femme is not a big draw in the record business, and AI is not about pushing the envelope. It's about easy packaging.

That said, being pudgy and flashy + femme + black seems to work for many male gospel singers. Also, CeLo Green is doing fine just about now.

A lot of commenters are uncomfortable discussing gay culture because they see it as judging: that's their own discomfort with homosexuality coming through. Others are just homophobic and especially femme-phobic. Your post is neither.

A performers mannerisms matter: that's part of what makes someone a compelling, sexy, charismatic. I would say there's a difference between performing a self-conscious androgynous manhood and perfecting the campier facial expressions and gestures used by drag queens. If he wants to draw big from drag culture, he'll have some love and fans. But obviously not as many.

People, People I am a 48 year old gay effinate man. I also served 20 years in the Military. I served long and hard. I served so people like Jacob could stand pround and be who he is. We dont all walk out the house with the desire to act like women. It is not a matter of acting like a man. We are men who just happen to have women mannerism. When I look at Jacob I see a young man who has probably heard a lot of nasty negitive thing thrown in his face. He is who he is. Why dont we saved the hated for the one who will and has tortured Jacob in the past and present. Sing your heart out Jacob and focus on those who love you for you.

Fe said...

I don't think he's gay I think he's just feminine. He just stated tonight that his dad died when he was 12 so if he was raised by women then he may just have those feminine traits and characteristics. Just as if a girl was raised by her father she may be characterized as a tomboy. Doesn't mean she is gay. Just because he's a male with those characteristics he's automatically labeled as gay. In any case does it matter? Adam Lambert kissed a guy on stage and openly stated he was gay. He won Idol. Jacob can sing he is one of the best singers on idol this year. What difference does it makes if he's gay HE CAN SING! Whether he's gay or not is between him and God.

Timothy Fitz said...

Fe said: "I don't think he's gay I think he's just feminine. He just stated tonight that his dad died when he was 12 so if he was raised by women then he may just have those feminine traits and characteristics."

Being raised by women doesn't make you effeminate. I know plenty of big, burly, skirt-chasing straight men who were raised by women.

And for the record, Adam Lambert DID NOT win American Idol.

Anonymous said...

Trust me, the boy is as GAY as they come. I also agree whole-heartedly with what Tim said above. The whole "oh he's not gay he was just raised by women" is total CRAP! I know plenty of SUPER-masculine straight men (some in my own family) who were raised by only women, and furthermore, I was raised by TWO parents and have a great relationship with my dad...and I'm GAY!

What I honestly think most people have a problem with when it comes to Jacob is NOT just that he's GAY, it's that he's a big, feminine DIVA when he performs. People, get your head out of your asses. We've been down this road before on A.I. Anybody remember Clay Aiken???

Anonymous said...

Jacob is gay definitely, and I liked him at first, but the more I see of him the less I like his performances visually. Luther was gay...Freddy Jackson was gay...Prince was feminine but not gay...I loved them all. The problem with Jacob is not that he's gay...HE HAS NO SWAG! There are a lot of gay men who have swag. There is something about Jacob that just isnt interesting to me and I absolutely hate the faces he makes more and more. He is too dramatic I think.

Anonymous said...

I'd like to see him do his donkey step dance and EXIT with those big, black gay hips swinging and maybe one last screech - he is NOBODY'S AMERICAN IDOL! Ew-w-w-w-w-w fo real.

Anonymous said...

Well, he most certainly has mannerisms of a female impersonator or a gay man although I have known certain males to have mannerisms like this I think Jacobs is more profound when he is singing because he gives everything he's got into belting out his voice (which is heavenly BTW). Someone in a earlier post asked where his Dad was~ he passed away when Jacob was a young boy. I at first thought Jacob had the mannerisms of a 'Holy Roller' because you can think that's perfectly natural in that setting in a choir gown. I don't know if he is gay and seriously I don't care~ his voice is awesome. The only AI that bothered me about being gay was Adam Lambert. I was disappointed and just when I got over it he went out and did some photoshoots that would make a female model jealous and then chose one for his CD cover. Never in a million years would you find that CD in MY car :( He could have done better about it.

Who is anyone to judge, Jacob or the posts from others? I was looking for background on Jacob like I have read on James etc. and gay comment sites are all I find? Sad. Really sad.

It is so unbelievable that Americas that claims to be so progressive still so backward in its mentality... Race, gender, religion and sexual identity still hinder people opinions and decisions with any objectivity. I see telent that is all, at least Jacob is not hiding or trying to make people to believe he is what he is not. And what really makes a man???? His mannerisms? I do not think so. You may not find find a 50cent as manly if you saw him bending over for another man. I ma just saying.... GOD bless you Jacob.

it is not weather ir not he is gay or not it is the mannerisms, his comments that if america votes him off, how do we live with oourselves, or something along that line. I love everyone but him he drives me nuts

It does bother me that he's obviously gay. Not a role model I would want for our children.

Ok personally I don't care which way the kid swings as long as it's not swinging at me! Personality wise he seems like a nice enough, friendly kid, who appears to have a genuine compassion for others. And that's admirable and a very likable quality. But as others have stated, his drama queen/diva mannerisms are annoying to watch. So here's what really gets me, his voice is terrible, his vibrato is all over the place, in every direction all at the same exact time, it's far to over the top, and extremely OBNOXIOUS! Every single contestant is phenomenal this year, except for Jacob! Every week someone who deserves to be there gets voted off while Jacob somehow floats through. Seriously people, how did Pia get voted off? She has an incredible, beautiful, strong voice, and is DROP DEAD GORGEOUS to boot!!! But instead we're stuck with a mix between Homer Simpson, Urkle, and Rue Paul, how the eff did that happen??? When he performs I guess I'm hearing something completely different than the judges and all those who vote for him, I just don't get it!!! Unless people are only voting for him based solely on that likability factor, and not his lack of singing talent?

Anonymous said...

I wouldnt buy his CD, nor would I be interested in his tour... maybe I could tolerate him in a choir but I dont go to church soooo...

Anonymous said...

I don't believe Jacob is gay, but he isn't sellable. The prancing around just drives me up a wall. I thought Tyler telling him he had to strut his tailfeathers more was a real disservice. Jacob needs to act, dress and sing like he is singing into a lady's eyes, not trying out for the Rockettes. If he did that, it wouldn't matter if he was gay. He's got tremendous range, why is he always singing so high? Sing lower, stop prancing, dress like a man. He needs to focus people on his talent.

Anonymous said...

I don't care if he's gay or not...BUT c'mon!!! no ONE should sing Nazareth's song like that!!! that is just wrong!

Anonymous said...

Jacob, you have a beautiful voice, but you really need to tone down your feminine ways. I went from enjoying seeing you on American Idol to not even caring anymore. You have to realize that you are losing a lot of your audience, when you come out dancing hard like a woman. You struggle singing your words, because you are popping so hard, and it is a big turn off. You sound so much better when you stay still. I rather you sing and not move, than the other way around. Everybody have their on views about homosexuals and lesbians, but why not win everyone votes by keeping that side of you to yourself. There are a lot of singers who are actors too. They give the audience what they want to hear and see. It is not only about being yourself. You can be yourself around your family. I just hope you will tone it down, because if you don't, I do not think you will last.

I live in the UK, where I've been watching A.I and I've often wondered how British audiences would take to Jacob in X Factor (our A.I equivalent). I don't think his mannerisms and femininity would be a hinderance to winning the show, with a voice like that. In fact it would be embraced and wouldn't be a big deal at all especially since 2 previous winners have been gay and British pop music has always had a strong tradition of high camp, theatricality and effeminacy from David Bowie and Marc Bolan in the 70s through the 80s with Boy George and the New Romantics movement and more recently the Scissors Sisters who were pretty much adopted in the UK as much as they've been shunned in the US. If Jacob were white and effiminate and/or gay there is absolutely no reason why he couldn't have a huge and successful career in the UK

However, it is hard to see how he could make a career as an R&B/Urban artist in the UK being black, effeminate and gay. The R&B/urban music scene here pretty much takes its inspiration from the US with the abs, swagger, tattoos and exaggerated masculinity being accepted standards for black male artists. Shame really. Even as a gay black man, I've been a bit uneasy with his mannerisms and histrionics. He is a very talented singer undoubtedly, but I can't help thinking had Simon Cowell been a judge this year he could have given him the honest critique which has been so lacking from the judges this year.

Timothy Fitz said...

Clearly, no one on that fake talents show is interested in telling the truth or picking contestants that are truly talented. Simon was the voice of reason on AI.

No one seems to mention that he is often out of key. His high pitch screams are not melodious. He sounds good at times but he has bad control and its painful at times because its so off key. Lauren is one of the only ones who is almost always on key even if not the best tone.

Anonymous said...

Ok, since nobody else said it, the most repulsive aspect of Jacob is his self-denying, holy roller, PRAY THE GAY AWAY, personna. It is his self hate, evidenced by that bible, Jesus-freak routine, that makes him so painfully uncomfortable to watch. So here's a special poem just for you, Saint Manlicker: "Roses are red, you have a fat ass, you can't change your identity by going to Mass."

i have no issue with him being gay, it's his drag queen persona that gets in the way. drag is fine if that is how you want to present yourself but his soft puffy body and face/hand gestures confuse people. there is a place in the business for him but he has to be authentic and real on how he presents himself. my advise is to lose 30 lbs and muscle up a bit. stop being judy garland and man up

If Lusk was trying to woo the gay controllers of the media world, he fell horribly short. All he needed to do was pepper his schtick with a few bi-polarish antics and he would have been passible and maybe he would've made it to the top two.

Anonymous said...

Bye Bye Jacob, FINALLY. Who in the hell kept voting for him??? Anyway, Scotty should be next, but it will probably be Lauren. But the final two should end up being Haley VS James..... I'm using my 150 (3 phone lines) votes for James. Haley's arrogant attitude should do her in. A lot of people were upset when Haley laughed at Pia being cut. Haley seems as though she'd stomp on her own mother's face to get to the top, otherwise, I'd vote for her. Obviously, people don't vote based on singing talent alone. I can't remember who won last year, but I do know the runner up, Adam Lambert, won a grammy this year. I'm waiting for Pia and James' releases.
