Natalie Portman's alleged 'Black Swan' dance cover-up, similar to 'Flashdance' controversy

Written By Alfred Haynes on Sunday, March 27, 2011 | Sunday, March 27, 2011

Have Natalie Portman, film makers Fox Searchlight, and a Black Swan choreographer, conspired to steal the credit from the real dancer in Portman's hit movie?

Sarah Lane, a professional ballerina with the American Ballet Theater, has accused award-winning actress, Natalie Portman, of stealing her thunder.

Lane asserts that most of the dance scenes in Black Swan were preformed by her, not Portman.

Portman has remained mostly silent on the issues, but Fox Searchlight and Portman's boyfriend/choreographer, claim Portman did most of the dancing in the movie.

History has a way of repeating itself.

In the 1983 movie, Flashdance, the public was led to believe that actress Jennifer Beals, performed her own dance routines. When in fact, several dancers, include a man, actually did the "legwork".

Is Black Swan the new Flashdance?

Who cares? These are actors not professional dancers. The movie was both weird and fantastic at the same time. Was it great to think Portman learned the ballet? Sure, but who really cares if she didn't? They have had body doubles since the beginning of time. Hell, even the very beautiful Dame Elizabeth had one. It's the nature of the business. They act, someone else does the hard stuff. Big deal. If you want to see professional ballet dancers, go to the Joffrey Ballet. This is a movie.
