UK X Factor winner Joe McElderry, dropped, flat broke after announcing he is gay?

U.S. X Factor contestants beware! Being declared the winner on Simon Cowell's new reality TV show isn't a guaranteed ticket to stardom.

19-year-old English singer Joe McElderry has a face that belongs in a Gucci ad and a voice that's an impeccable blend of Boy George and George Michael, with a dash of Elton John. But, apparently, good looks and an angelic voice aren't enough to make it in the music biz.

According to the Mirror, over a year ago, Simon Cowell literally promised McElderry the keys to fame and fortune.

After snatching first place on the UK version of X Factor in 2009, the golden voiced teen moved into an upscale neighborhood in West London. From all appearances, it seemed the young lad was on his way to Hollywood.

But fifteen months later, McElderry has moved back in with his mother and he is virtually broke, said the Mirror.

In July 2010, McElderry publicly announced that he is gay. Since that declaration, his UK record sales have plummeted and none of the U.S. entertainment entities, including Disney, will sign him.

Mmm… I wonder what happened.

Holy smoking "eyes" is this guy a hottie or what. Too bad he's not my "type"
Are we STILL that prejudiced in the world?..seems we are. 21st century with Puritan thinking. Brainwashing is alive and well.

Towanda, I'm not into robbing cradles, but this kid is too pretty for words.

His looks aside, he's a really good singer, and I think he deserves a platform for his talent.

People think the music industry is more open to gays, now. That's not true.

I think they were more accepting in the 70s and 80s. People like Boy George, Sylvester, and Freddie Mercury of Queen would have a hard time getting a record deal today.

That's the same thing that happen to the first UK Pop idol Will Young
