If you think rap music is the only genre that inspires senseless violence - think again.

Police have accused 20-year-old Deandre Minkens of Calumet City and 19-year-old Shante Thomas from Chicago's Rogers Park neighborhood, of strangling 18-year-old pregnant teen, Rosemary Newman, to death.

Investigators say, on April 23, 2011, Deandre Minkens drove to meet Newman with Shante Thomas hiding in the trunk of his car. When Minkens turned up the volume on a song called I Hate You by Sick Puppies, that was Thomas' cue to crawl out of the trunk and help Minkens murder Newman, said police.

Minkens and Thomas strangled Newman to death with a cell phone cord and left the Alsip, Illinois teen's body in a Calumet City forest preserve, allege authorities.

Rosemary Newman, who had been in a previous relationship with Deandre Minkens, was nine months pregnant.

According to police, Minkens hatched the murder plot, because he didn't want to be a father.

Based on several news reports, Minkens has a history of violence towards children.

Minkens and Thomas have been charged with first-degree murder.

Prior to researching this story, I had never heard the song, I Hate You, and I wasn't familiar with the group, Sick Puppies.

Here are a few of the lyrics that investigators say, fueled the murder of Rosemary "Rosie" Newman:

I hate you when you're gone
I hate you turn me on
I hate the way I need you when
I don't know where you are
I love it even more
When I find you on the floor
I know you think you hate me
But I will always hate you more

I never knew until I got a taste
What a waste
For what I had been through
'Cause nothing ever really makes that change
I'm so ashamed
Of what I did to you

A "repulsive" song doesn't fuel a murder. Via free will, Minkens and Thomas chose to murder Newman.

Rudy, I agree. Inspiration does not take away your free will; instead, it nudges you in a certain direction.

Throughout history, music has inspired to people to do all kinds of things: cry, make love, dance, leave a bad relationship, and even kill.

Timothy, I agree that inspiration nudges. :)
However, "we" still choose whether or not to kill someone. :|

Rudy, I agree. Even after being nudged in the wrong direction, we still have the freedom of choice. Trust me, I am not defending these alleged murderers. I am merely pointing out that human behavior can be influenced by certain stimuli, e.g., music.

Every decision we make is influenced by something.

People make the decision to eat right, because it makes them feel better or they want to live longer. Similarly, some people make the decision to harm others, because it gives them a thrill.

For all we know, Minkens and Thomas were sitting at home listening to "I Hate You", when they allegedly made the decision to murder the mother of Minkens' unborn child.

If what investigators say is true, and that song was really playing in the background as Rosemary Newman drew her last breaths - that proves that particular song had a great influence over what went down that fateful day.

Timothy, this is why we have brains, which filter the influences out by consequences. :)

Rudy, all brains were not created equally. :-)

Oh please, people will use any excuse under the sun for their actions. In the end, we all have free will to make the choice to get up each morning and CHOSE to do the right thing. "Dion didn't make me a "Runaround Sue" Steppenwolf didn't make me want to "ride a magic carpet" and the Beatles didn't make me want "to start a revolution. The "devil" made me do it sound more like it! While I disliked Anita Bryant's actions, I do think this kind of music should be BANNED!

These 2 are no different than the bin laden's of this world. They are filled with hatred and void of any remorse. Just look in their eyes and see where evil lives.

We NEED the death penalty for crimes such as this. Killing an unborn child merits the death penalty...PERIOD!

Satan/Lucifer/The Devil doesn't make anyone do anything. While Satan can suggest an evil deed, the decision is solely made by the person.

Rudy Darling..I was being facetious..about the "devil" made me do it comment...I agree with you:)

Rudy said...

towanda, thanks for the clarification. :)
The Devil made me reply to you. :)

I grew up hearing that Dungeons & Dragons was making people kill. You know what makes people kill? People's twisted mind and lack of morals or respect. This was premeditated murder, they were going to kill this girl whether "I Hate You" was playing, or "I Love NY" was playing....

Adam, I agree 1000%. :)

This is the same as when they blamed Judas Priest for those suicides in '85. Or when they put the crosshairs on Marilyn Manson for Columbine. Or...well any other time in history that the finger is pointed in the direction of music, of whatever genre, in order to shift the blame from the person responsible. You know that thing called free will? Yea, that thing exist and guess what else, we control it. Like Adam said, he was gonna commit the murder regardless of what he was listening too. It's not like he was gonna have a sudden change of heart if he heard "Under the Sea" or anything. You know why you don;t hear about this blame game stuff happening overseas? Because we in America for some reason never want to step up to the plat and take the blame for our actions, it always has to be someone else's fault. And this band isn't even that heavy or, as some would say, "devil music". Their just a trio of harmless Aussies. You wanna hear stuff that sounds like its straight from the pits of hell go listen to some death metal or cradle of filth, then blindly judge them. It goes back to the culture thing, cause you've got crazy norwegian bands that actually mutilate dead animals on stage and you don't ever hear them as the inspiration of murder. But here you got a song called "I Hate You" and oh no! Stop the train! This MUST be the reason this idiot murdered his baby's mama. Maybe it was just the last thing he heard on the radio? Or maybe, and this is going out on a limb here, he was just an irresponsible CHILD afraid of the big boy world, and like the coward he is, thought murder was the ideal way out. /rant

How many of you have actually listened to this song before? Or listened to Sick Puppies at all?

The song had nothing to do with the murder other than the fact that the murderers want to blame someone else for their own actions.

This type of music should be BANNED is a ridiculous statement stemming from an ignorant person. Listen to the band. Listen to the music. Actually pay attention to their lyrics...The song had nothing to do with the crime other than it playing. It did not give them the idea to kill a pregnant girl, their own ignorance and hatred did.

This song isnt about murder though. I love Sick Puppies and I love I hate you, but it isnt about murder. It's about being in a love-hate relationship. If two idiots decided to kill someone and they just so happened to blame I hate you then their ignorant. It's so fricking ridiculous! This is just like blaming Marilyn Manson for the Columbine Massacre! SCREW THE GOVERNMENT!
