Prince William, Kate Middleton get married; UK taxpayers get a hefty bill

Written By Alfred Haynes on Friday, April 29, 2011 | Friday, April 29, 2011

Kate and William are all smiles, while fellow Brits struggle to survive.

London -- Am I only the only person on the planet who is sick of hearing about Prince William and Catherine Middleton's freakin’ public aid wedding?

In case you didn’t know, Ole Willie and Kate Middle-what's-her-face's highly publicized nuptial affair is being paid for, in part, by the poor and working class taxpayers in the United Kingdom. A fact that I find so distasteful - so nauseating - I could literally vomit all over Kate's pricey wedding gown.

Last year, UK citizens shelled out a staggering 60 million dollars to Queen Elizabeth and her dependents. That bill does not include security, which some say cost an additional 150 million dollars a year.

Speaking of security, I read somewhere that it’s going to cost UK taxpayers $11 million dollars just to provide police for Friday’s ostentatious display of tax-funded snobbery.

Meanwhile, there are approximately 1.6 million children living in extreme poverty in Britain. That number is sure to rise sense welfare funding has been cut, wages have gone down, and fuel prices are skyrocketing.

While the rest of you are celebrating what I consider to be the world's biggest case of welfare fraud, I will be thinking about the poor people in Britain who can barely pay for food and heat.

Timothy, as one person of "the rest of you...", I definitely did *NOT* celebrate this wedding. Like always, I was up late and watched the wedding on tv.

I agree with you about the welfare fraud, public aid, poor people, security costs, etc. How is this any different than similar concerns in the US, especially the corporate and politicians' retirement welfares?

It isn't. However, politicians and CEOs are decent enough to pretend to work for their bloated salaries.

The Royals do charity work. :)

It was well worth it, me old china. It gave the commoners the chance to string the bunting up along the street lights, pour hot cups of tea and almost as warm pints of beer, produce lashings of sausage rolls and tea cakes and have a jolly good street party. Celebrating royal weddings with a community knees' up. That's what made Britain Great, don't you know?

It's my understanding that the Royals and the Middletons were paying at least 10 million for this, not the taxpayers. I could be wrong though. Seems they said that on one of the news stations. Also, the Brit's pay about 1 dollar per person to support the monarchy, whom they all seem to love. Small price to pay for all the pomp and circumstances and spotlight it puts on England.

I think this event was good for the world. Every time I see anything about it, it puts a smile on my face and we all know we ALL can use some smiles:)

What's the difference between this and some of the heads of state dinners that are thrown at the White House? They're on the taxpayers dime too and we have millions of people on public aid, hundreds of thousands of hungry children and thousands of homeless. Sometimes a party is a good thing.

Yep, I think you might be the only one Timothy, but than, it's cool to be unique:)

Towanda, the day of the wedding and the day after, I stayed away from my televisions. But I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the show! :-)
