Police said a white man, who is also a hip-hop fan, slashed a Sri Lankan University of Illinois law professor's throat during an apparent hate crime.
On Wednesday, December 7, 2011, 23-year-old Joshua Scaggs, who also goes by Josh Scaggs, stabbed 41-year-old Anurudha Udeni Dhammika Dharmapala in the neck while the two men were in an Amtrak station in Champaign, Illinois, said police.

Investigators said, initially, the witness thought Scaggs was choking the professor, but when he pulled Scaggs off the victim, the witness discovered Dharmapala's throat had been cut with what looked like a utility knife.
Scaggs, who appeared to be smiling in his mug shot, has been charged with attempted murder and two counts of aggravated battery. His bond has been set at $500,000.
The law professor is still in critical condition and is said to be fighting for his life.
According to the accused slasher's Facebook profile, Scaggs is a fan of Drake, 50 Cent, Rihanna, and Micheal Jackson.
So, here’s the million dollar question, can a racist be a fan of black/minority entertainers, and still be a racist?
