Killing bin Laden was illegal, a war crime?

Written By Alfred Haynes on Monday, May 2, 2011 | Monday, May 02, 2011

While democrats, republicans, and every political party in between is slapping the president on the back for killing bin Laden, no one seems to be asking an important question. Was killing bin Laden illegal?

When U.S. Navy SEALs invaded bin Laden’s modest mansion in Abbatttobad, Pakistan, it’s possible they violated international laws.

Thus far, there is no indication U.S. forces were formally granted permission from Congress to use deadly force against the Al Qaeda leader. And as far as I know, we are not at war with Pakistan.

Some political pendants are claiming that because we allegedly gave bin Laden the option to surrender peacefully, and because we didn't use treacherous means to gain access to bin Laden's home, killing the alleged 9/11 mastermind was perfectly legal.

However, those assertions have not stopped Obama's detractors from calling bin Laden's murder a political assassination.

He declared war on the US. In 1998, he and Ayman al-Zawahiri co-signed a fatwa in the name of the World Islamic Front for Jihad Against Jews and Crusaders which declared the killing of Americans and their allies an "individual duty for every Muslim". He was a combatant and he got taken out in a firefight. When you start a war you have to be prepared to take the consequences.

yeah, but do american soldiers have the right to go wherever they want and shot someone to death? doesn't congress have a say in these matters? obama is bush part 2!

Sheesh people, this man was being helped by Pakistan. He was the WORLDS most wanted criminal, killing Muslims and American's. IF the world isn't going to help than maybe we do have to go in and take an evil person out! HE declared war on us and the rest of the world, what should we do, just let him slide and let other countries help him so he can cause death and mayhem again & again? They sure scream loud and clear when they want us to come in and help take out a tyrant (Libya, Syria) and than scream when we do. People need to make up their minds. What choice did we have? The CIA, military AND the President knew he was there BUT Pakistan played dumb!

There is no way on earth I would compare this president to BUSH.( except that he has BUSH cronies) At least this president got him and really got the "mission accomplished" that BUSH could not do. Maybe he was/is just too close to the Bin Laden family to actually get him "dead or alive"...Please. Maybe Bin Laden was of no use anymore. There's something very very suspicious about BUSH not being able to find him in 8 years BUT Obama could find him in a year and a half into his presidency. Bush had one agenda and one agenda only..to get revenge for his father. Not to help the american citizens, or this country. Oh, I forgot, he had another one, to make the rich richer!
We had the right and we did it!

Congress can't even decide how to spit without a fight amongst the parties.

Pakistan had to have known that if the US found bin Laden living in their country, undisturbed, they would go in and take care of business.

Pakistan was prepared to do absolutely nothing. If the US had also done nothing, this butcher of unarmed innocents would still be free to perhaps plot to kill you and me or our relatives or people we know.

I say the US did a good thing. Pakistan brought this action on itself. It is supposed to be catching these guys, not letting them live comfortably within the shadow of huge military bases.

If you feel Pakistan had its toes stepped on, well isn't that better than having your entire leg blown off by bin Laden and his henchmen and women?

Hey Tim, why do you refuse to post my comment from yesterday.....you know, where I posted the 2001 "Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Terrorists"? It was passed by Congress and signed by Bush, giving the POTUS the power to track down those responsible for 9-11.

"Thus far, there is no indication U.S. forces were formally granted permission from Congress to use deadly force against the Al Qaeda leader." You are so wrong....and ignorant.

I don't know if bin Laden was the villian the press says he was, either. However, I do know that our governemt is filled to brim with liars who have a nasty little habit of manipulating every situation to their advantage.

Timothy, I agree with your May 5th, 7:28 PM comment 1000%. :)

At its' disposal, the president has the War Powers Act, which means during our three wars, the president can declare anyone an enemy of the state and/or suspend the constitution.

When I was boy, my great grandmother told that trust was something everyone, even our government, has to EARN. I have never forgotten those words.

Over the years, I have learned to never substitute someone else's judgement for my own. Just because the government named bin Laden public enemy number one, doesn't mean a thing to me. The government also had MLK under surveillance, injected men with syphilis, frequently lies about the way soldiers are wounded or killed during battle, and NEVER mentions the civilians they murder overseas.

Getting back to our soldiers, did you know that their are tens of thousands of wounded veterans who have been denied medical treatment, because military officials, acting on behalf of our government, tricked them into signing away their benefits?

If people had a true understanding of the way the government works, they wouldn't believe a word any of them had to say.

Watch "Loose Change, the 9/11 conspiracy and you will wonder if, in fact, Bin Laden was a pawn for the CIA and the Bush agenda...revenge for his father...I'm just saying...

Also read "The Looming Towers" Pretty interesting read about the Bin Laden we created.

I never once thought Bin Laden brought the towers down, or hit the Pentagon or crashed the plane in that field. Sure had to have help and easy passage to carry that off, right?. Every wonder why the big mouth Bush is soooo quiet now-a days when he was on the TV and in the news every other day after this happened? It isn't always what it seems. Ever wonder why the Bin Laden family were the only people allowed to fly on 9/11?

NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING surprises me about government and the "NEW WORLD ORDER". Seems Bush is taking the fifth now-a days. Into the sunset indeed!

towanda & Timothy, I agree with your May 6 comments 1000%. :)

Timothy, I'm aware of the denied/lost military benefits via military and/or governmental deceit, along with bogus, trumped up charges too. :(
